| Over the past 12
months, the Revelstoke Community Skills Centre has partnered with
several local businesses and non-profit agencies to assist them to
upgrade the skills and abilities of their staff. Twenty separate
community training initiatives have provided assistance to over 200
local residents.
Using funds awarded from the
Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program and funds allocated
by the Board of the Community Skills Centre, training programs have been
developed on a cost-shared basis to assist local companies and agencies.
The goal of the training programs is to help local companies maintain
their competitive position in the regional and national economy, and to
assist local non-profit associations to ensure their staff have the
training and education they require to help them deliver a high level of
service to the residents of our community.
Access
to affordable training and education opportunities for local businesses
and non-profit associations in our community is severely constrained by
our geographic location and by our small population. It is often
difficult to bring top quality programs to the community on a cost
recovery basis. It can also be prohibitively expensive for small
businesses and non-profits to send staff out of town for the training
they require. As a result, local businesses and non-profits often have
difficulty accessing the training and education programs they require to
keep the skills and abilities of their staff current with the latest
practices. The result of this can be that local companies fall behind in
a competitive market place, and local non-profit groups are unable to
maintain the high level of services that they provide. A number of
training and education needs were identified as high priorities in the
recently completed Community Development Strategic Action Plan.
Through this project, training
has taken place in a number of different areas, including tourism ,
forestry , early childhood education, e-commerce, value-added
woodworking, and computer skills. The initiative is very much focused on
developing employment skills which will allow people to retain their
jobs or improve their opportunities to find better jobs.
