Promotion to attract students to
the Revelstoke English Language School (RELS) continues. Staff at RELS
attended Education Fairs in Mexico City in February 2003, and in Seoul
in March 2003. Through contacts at these fairs and agents in Korea,
Mexico and Taiwan students have begun to enroll at RELS.
It is expected that there will be
five students in attendance for July. Through a Tour Service Company in
Cheong Ju, Korea it is hoped that there will be thirty students enroll
in a Summer English Camp which begins July 18 and finishes August 8th.
To promote the camp, Carol Powadiuk and Mayor Mark McKee traveled to
Cheong Ju to be part of a promotional campaign to attract students to
Revelstoke. While in Korea Carol and Mark met with Canadian Embassy
staff, the Mayor and City Council of Cheong Ju, the Chair of the Chamber
of Commerce, the executives at the Cable TV station and two
industrialists who expressed interest in Revelstoke.
Koreans express a great eagerness
to learn to speak English and a desire to be involved in business
ventures with Canadians. The top two areas of business which hold
promise for the Revelstoke area include ESL students coming to Canada
and the exporting of wood products to Korea. It is expected that along
with the young campers coming in July, there will also be some business
people who will explore business opportunities here.
People in Revelstoke are invited to
become familiar with Korean people by providing a Homestay for one of
the campers. Contact Liz Ebbett at 837-4239 if you are interested in
hosting a young Korean camper this summer for three weeks.
