Community Lenders Since 1988

 SE clients receive one-on-one
 business training and
 research / business planning
assistance as  well as a grant.
The grant comes in the form
 of employment insurance
 benefits, but with a very
 distinct difference.

 Participants are not required
 to claim revenue from their
 business against their
 Employment Insurance
 benefits. This takes a great
deal of the pressure and risk
out of the first year of
 running a new business, as
 participants are not
 dependent on drawing
 money out of their new
business in order to pay for
things like housing, food or personal bills. The idea behind the Program is that participants have one year to grow their business into a self supporting income generator. In time, these new businesses hire new staff as they expand, thus creating an even greater employment benefit to the community. Participation in the Self Employment Program is FREE to eligible individuals.

Self Employment clients can make application to the CFDC for start-up financing. To date, over $1,000,000 has been loaned to SE Program participants.

Eligibility for the program is tied to the employment insurance system. In order to qualify, clients must be either currently collecting EI, have exhausted an EI claim in the past three years and still be unemployed, or have been on a maternity/parental EI claim in the past five years and not re-entered the work force.
