| Economic Development is under review by the City to determine if the function of the EDC should remain the same or if some revisions should be considered to make the most effective and efficient use of existing resources. With the EDC position vacant, this is the opportune time to redefine the role of Economic Development should any changes be advantageous.
There are reassuring economic indicators that Revelstoke continues to be a progressive coimnunity. Business expansions are well underway for both Coopers Foods and Southside Grocery. The Pingston Creek hydro electric generating station has been providing employment for an estimated 50+ workers over the past few months and work on the project is expected to continue well into next year. Construction of our new RCMP building is also contributing to local economic activity.
The film industry has certainly left a lasting impression on Revelstoke. The Barber, The Mole and other
productions have made significant contributions to our economy during
the past year. It is expected that industry will continue to grow,
as our treasured mountain scenery and positive community support for
their activities is exactly what this industry desires. Our film commissioner, Adelheid
Bender, is doing an excellent job at promoting Revelstoke and the community is beginning to reap the rewards.
On Sept. 18 & 19, the Community Energy Project Steering Committee received presentations in Revelstoke from three proponents. We are further evaluating their options and there are some very significant decisions to be made. The District Heating component, unfortunately, may not be financially feasible at this time, but has not been abandoned. The economics are favourable for a plant that brings emission standards well into compliance, provides heat for Downie's dry kiln operations and generates electricity for sale to BC Hydro's "Green Energy" program.
The Planning Department has been working towards completion of several projects:
- Westside Road - Due to the receipt of several inquiries to purchase lands, BC Assets and Lands is coordinating the development of a land use plan for the Westside Road area identifying where further industrial and tourism commercial activity can be considered.
- Grizzly Plaza Extension - In response to a renewed interest to further expand the commercial use of existing sidewalks, staff is initiating a conceptual planning study which will include investigation of various design options and selection of a preferred scheme for the Plaza's extension.
- Former Co-op Lands - a comprehensive plan is being prepared for the 14 acre site at Edward and Oscar Streets that will take into consideration what type of land use would be most appropriate for the site and how to recondition the existing Powerhouse Road.
- Public Information Brochures - to provide a
better understanding of the various development processes in place, staff have prepared a new set of information brochures. Topics range from the 'Rezoning Process' to 'Items to Check When Purchasing a Development Property'. Copies are
available free of charge at City Hall.
